-and NOW from our SPORTS DESK - Athletic Director Mike Papenberg reports: Happy Wednesday Everyone, we hope you had a nice 4-day weekend and enjoyed the snow! Here is a look at how our Panther Athletic Teams performed last week:
Up first: PHS Senior, Maura Russell represented Palmyra High School at the National Girls & Women in Sports Day at Rutgers University over the weekend organized by the NJSIAA. Congrats to our 3-season athlete, Maura, on being such a great representative of PHS Athletics!
The Wrestling Team is on the heater going 5-0 on the week! The squad opened the week with a walk off win at Pemberton. Blake Wood pinned his opponent in the final match of the night to win it for the Panthers 39-36. Chase Moritz, Trevor Young, Patrick Daly and Stephen Hankey were also winners on the mat for the Panthers.
The wrestling program then traveled to Atlantic City for a match on Thursday and defeated AC 48-27. Blake Wood, Trevor Young, Ben Still and Patrick Daly all picked up wins on the mat.
The Panthers then hosted a quad on Saturday and completed the sweep defeating Riverside (70-12), Burlington City (74-6) and Willingboro (76-3) at the quad.
- Against Riverside, Gabriella Alves DeSousa, Trevor Young, Ben Still, Aidan Hines, Victor Martin, Pat Daly and Stephen Hankey all had wins on the mat.
- In the match against Burlington City, Ben Still, Aidan Hines, Chace Mulherin, Jaiden Doyle, Sy’keem Muse, Victor Martin, Pat Daly, Joe Garrison and Deakon Haines all had victories on the mat.
- Finally, against Willingboro, Trevor Young, Ben Still, Sy’keem Muse, Mailee Kahana, Joe Garrison, Deakon Haines and Stephen Hankey all picked up wins on the mat. The Panthers are now 11-3 on the season and will travel to Bordentown today for their next match.
The Girls Basketball Team continued their amazing start to the season going 2-0 on the week. The girls opened the week with a 66-26 win over Doane Academy. Cadence Anderson exploded for 27 points to lead the girls. Angie Sauls added 10 points for the Lady Panthers. The girls then destroyed KIPP Charter School on Thursday, 62-19. Cadence Anderson was able to score her 1,000th point early in the 2nd half becoming the 22nd PHS basketball player to accomplish this amazing feat. Cadence ended the game with her 2nd straight 27 point performance. Angie Sauls added 12 points in the win. The girls are now 9-1 on the season and will host Willingboro High School for their next game today at 4PM.
The Boys Basketball Team had an undefeated week going 2-0 on the week. The boys opened their week with a hard fought 59-55 win over Moorestown Friends. The Panthers had 4 players in double figures. Azmir Taylor led the way with 18 points. Sam Adams and Da’Shon Edmonds each added 12 points with John Latimore chipping in 11 points. The Panthers demolished Riverside on Friday, 60-34. Azmir Taylor led the team with 24 points and Da’Shon Edmonds added 17 points in the big division win. The Panthers are now 6-5 on the season and will host Maple Shade High School tomorrow in a BCSL Independence Division showdown.
The Winter Track & Field Teams competed at the Toms River Bennett Center on Monday. Here are their top results:
- -The Girls 4X200 team of Zania Best, Keronja Watson, Maddie Grimes & Sanna Christmas placed 16th
- Kirsi Muracco placed 16th in the high jump and ran a personal best in the 1600
- The Boys shuttle hurdle team of Abdul Iyiola, Josh Carter, Brock Weaver, Charles Rosica placed 14th
- The Boys 4X400 of Colin Broadbelt, Abdul Iyiola, Pat Broadbelt, Xavier Oliver placed 4th
- Josh Carter placed 15th in the high jump and jumped a personal best
- Alex Lopez placed 20th in the pole vault
- Joe Barben 6th place in the shot put
- Doug Aird 19th place in the shot put
The Winter Track & Field Teams then traveled to Toms River for the NJSIAA Relay. Here are the results from The NJSIAA State Relay Track Meet:
- The Girls sprint medley team of Keronja Watson, Sarah Agnew, Maddie Grimes & Maura Russell placed 14th in the State
- The Shuttle Hurdle Team of Keronja Watson, Maura Russell, Maddie Grimes & Anna Rosica placed 6th best in the State
- The Boys Sprint Medley team of Colin Broadbelt, Abdul Iyiola, Xavier Oliver & Marcus Grimes took 8th in the State
- The Boys Pole Vault team of Alex Lopez and Michael Kozlowski placed 6th in the State
- Joe Barben threw a personal best and now has the 3rd farthest throw in all groups compared to all the Juniors in the state.
- Zariah Welch threw a personal best and has the 3rd furthest throw in all groups compared to all the Freshman in the state.
- Olivia Lynch threw a personal best and has the farthest throw in the whole state when compared to all the Freshman in the state!

The Middle School Girls & Boys Basketball Teams won their 1st games of the season last Monday!
The MS Boys earned a 37-31 victory. Kwame Chisolm scored 9 points to lead the team. JJ Moran, Erik Lebrun and Burak Sayin each scored 6 points. The boys then lost to Riverton on Wednesday 44-22. Kwame Chisolm scored 12 points in the loss.
The MS Girls team defeated New Egypt 27-18. Az-Zahra Pollard led the scoring with 17 points. The girls then lost to Riverton on Wednesday, 35-4. Deanna Bailey scored the Panthers 4 points.
The Boys and Girls Middle School Teams will return to action today at New Egypt.
