-and NOW from our SPORTS DESK - Athletic Director Mike Papenberg reports Good Morning Everyone. We are only a couple of weeks away from spring sports playoffs!  Not much time left in the 2024 spring sports season.  Here is a look at how our athletes performed last week:

The Golf Team (our solo golfer) Doug Aird represented Palmyra High School at the Carl Arena Open on Thursday at Valleybrook Country Club.  He will represent PHS again on 5/22 at the Burlington County Scholastic League Open at Rancocas.

The Baseball Team had a 1-2 week.  The boys opened the week with an 18-8 loss to Doane Academy.  Steve Peltz had 2 hits for the Panthers.  Tom Staszak and Joe Elmes each had RBI’s.  The boys lost a tight one to Riverside on Wednesday, 7-4.  Tom Staszak, Steve Peltz and Anthony Morgenstern each had 2 hits for the Panthers. Brandon Howell, Brayden Minnix and Tom Staszak all had RBI’s.  Joe Elmes struck out 15 Rams but picked up the loss.  The squad finished off their week with a 7-3 win at Clayton on Friday.  Joe Elmes had 3 hits including a homerun and 3 RBI’s to lead the offense.  Anthony Morgenstern had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s for the Panthers.  Ian Smith and Steve Peltz also had 2 hits.  Anthony Morgenstern was the winning pitcher, striking out 7 batters in 6 innings.  The boys are now 5-7 on the season and will travel to Burlington City today for their next game.

The Softball Team girls were undefeated last week, going 3-0!  On Wednesday the girls beat Pennsauken High School, 11-7.  Gabby Gray had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s.  Jisselle Martinez, Jasmine Martinez, Aubrey Wagner and Charlotte Reis each had 2 hits.  Jasmine Martinez picked up the win by pitching 7 innings and striking out 8. 
The girls then defeated Trenton High School on Friday, 17-7.  Jisselle Martinez had 2 hits and 4 RBI’s.  Sidney Lim had 3 hits and 1 RBI.  Gabby Gray, Evie Aird and Charlotte Reis each had 2 hits.  Jasmine Martinez picked up the win striking out 9 tornadoes.  The girls are now 7-6 on the season and will host Maple Shade at Legion Field today in their next game.

The Boys Tennis Team went 1-1 on the week.  The boys beat Pemberton on Tuesday, 5-0.  Julian Carlino (6-0, 6-0), Richie Butler (6-0, 6-1) and Jaden Jennings (6-0, 6-1) all won their singles matches.  The doubles teams of Jack Timlin/Owen Jacobs (6-0, 6-1) and Justin Smyth/Nolan Falicki (6-4, 6-2) all won as well. 
The boys lost a close one to Lindenwold on Friday, 3-2.  Richie Butler won at 2nd singles (6-4, 4-6, 10-3) and our first doubles team of Jaden Jennings/Owen Jacobs also won (7-5, 6-2).  The boys are now 4-3 on the season and will host Collingswood at Legion today in their next match.

The Spring Track & Field Teams competed Thursday at Delsea High School, Abdul Iyiola competed against some of the best runners in the state and nation at the Nike Elite Meet.  Abdul placed 3rd in the 400 hurdles and won a medal and some new Nike gear. The coaching staff also found out that he will be attending Division 1 Mount Saint Mary’s to run track next year.  Congrats to Abdul!  Both the boys and girls teams will return to action at home on Tuesday against Trenton Catholic.

====================M I D D L E   S C H O O L==========================

The Middle School Track & Field Teams ran at Indian Mills Middle School on Monday.        Here are their top finishers:

Boys:

  • Burak Sayin- 1st in the shot put, 100 and 200

  • Sebastian dela Pena- 2nd in the mile

  • JJ Moran- 3rd in the mile

  • Jaxson Ridgway- 1st in the 800

  • Kwame Chishom-2nd in the 200

  • The 4x100 Relay Team of JJ Moran, Burak Sayin Kwame Chisholm and Sebastian dela Pena finished in 1st Place.

Girls:

  • Maya Richman-Dupont-3rd in the mile

  • The 4x100 Relay Team of Az-Zahra Pollard, Hailey Monroe, Alivia Brown and Khloe Hunter finished in 2nd Place.

The middle school track team will run at Voorhees tomorrow.
